Create Common Keyboard Characters with Alt Key

“Alt” key on a PC keyboard is used to alternate the functions of other pressed keys. You can use different “Alt codes” to create common keyboard characters with Alt key. Alt codes are numeric codes you can type while holding down “Alt” key on your keyboard. Alt key is a modifier of “Shift key”, it works in similar fashion to “Shift” key. For instance you can type $ by holding down “shift” key while striking “4” key that is located along the top of your keyboard. You can also create common keyboard characters with “Alt” key in similar fashion. You need to hold down “Alt” key while pressing some numbers on “Number Pad”, on the right-hand side of your keyboard.

  • Open “Ms Word document” or “Note Pad” on your PC. Ensure that the “Num Lock” is on. (Press “Num Lock” key one time, the “Num Lock” light will come on).
  • Choose Alt code you want to use. Hold down “Alt” key with left hand and strike your desired code on number pad with right hand. For example if you want a music code, hold down “Alt” key and type “13” on number pad, then release “Alt” key. You will get this Or you can type “14” while holding down “Alt” key to get this sign when you release the alt key.
  • You should use “Number Pad” on right hand side of your keyboard. Here are some other codes to create common keyboard characters:

For Math Codes

  • Hold down “Alt” and type “0162”, you will get ¢
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “0247”, you will get ÷
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “0176”, you will get °

For Arrow Codes

  • Hold down “Alt” and type “24”, you will get
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “25”, you will get
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “26”, you will get
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “27”, you will get “

For Symbols

  • Hold down “Alt” and type “1”, you will get “
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “2”, you will get “
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “7”, you will get “
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “8”, you will get “
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “9”, you will get “
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “10”, you will get “
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “0169”, you will get “©
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “0174”, you will get “®
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “0153”, you will get “
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “30”, you will get “
  • Hold down “Alt” and type “31”, you will get “

You can make a “Cheat Sheet” of codes that you will use most often to refer until you memorize them.

Note: These codes are tested with XP operating system.
